I’m Not Laughing.

April 2, 2011

While I was taking pictures for the post “Buh Bye, Snow! Hello, Grass!” on The Infinite Vertices blog, I came across two photos. One of them was kinda funny mainly because of the location of the photo. The other, however, rubbed me the wrong way. Here are the two photos:

The first photo says “Peter sucks at Zelda”. It’s a silly sight to look at when you’re looking down onto the volley ball courts in front of your dorms from the 18th floor. The second photo, however, says, “[Unknown name] is gay”. Sure there is nothing wrong with being gay. This is an LGBTQIA blog, so of course my last statement goes without saying. But assuming this isn’t derogatory, no one wants to be outed, especially not to a dorm that houses about 500 students. In my opinion, no one (unless the writer of the statement is the person being outed) would write something like that with positive intentions. I mean sure, maybe it’s funny to the writer, but it’s being used in the derogatory sense and is highly offensive. I go to Syracuse University, which is number 14 out of 265 colleges reviewed for most LGBT friendly with 5/5 stars according to Campus Climate Index. It really angers me to see that, even with that ranking, we still have a large number of ignorant students on campus. I want to see how this flies when everyone wakes up.

Unfortunately there will always be ignorant people in this world. No matter how LGBTQ friendly we get, there will always be people that are not okay with it. There’s still people that are white supremacist, against women’s rights, etc… We can not extinguish the world of misinformed and bigoted people. But what we can do is speak up and educate others why actions like this are not right.
